Serving Those Who Serve

When your husband is commander at the American Legion Post of Odessa, you are sure to have some pretty great stories. We sat down with one of our CCFCU team members, Denise Wheeler, to hear all about these stories. Denise and her veteran husband, Mike, are actively involved with the veterans in our community along with those who currently serve. Both come from military families filled with rich history and amazing stories that fuel their love for serving those who have served. From visiting veterans at the VA hospital in Big Spring and being a part of the Patriot Guard to sponsoring a grandchild of a veteran to educate them on patriotism for our country, the Wheelers’ work with the American Legion is endless. One of their favorite events to be a part of is the Run for the Wall. This annual event has veterans riding their motorcycles cross country to bring honor and awareness for forgotten veterans. These motorcyclists start in California and end in Washington D.C. on Memorial Day to visit the memorials of their fellow soldiers who have made the ultimate sacrifice. Every May, 300-500 of these veterans ride through our area. Denise and her husband are part of the team that feed the motorcyclists. It starts with a rally of volunteers waving flags as the riders pull in and ends with full hearts and full stomachs as stories are shared over delicious food. Denise and her husband have been participating in this event for eight years and plan on continuing for many years to come. Their helping hands in the veteran community are a huge blessing to both them and those they serve. “It’s the littlest things that make the biggest difference”, Denise told us. “Just saying ‘thank you’ will warm their hearts and put a big smile on their faces. They have done so much for us, the least we can do is thank them.”
