For almost 68 years, Complex Community Federal Credit Union has proudly served our members and communities across West Texas. Along the way, one question continues to come up: what’s the difference between a credit union and a bank, anyway?
Both are financial institutions where you can deposit your hard-earned money, receive loans, and do much more, but the difference lies in the structure of these organizations. In this article we’ll explore the history of credit unions, the history of CCFCU, and what the main differences between banks and credit unions really are.
Built on Community Since the Beginning
Credit Unions were established in the 1800s and made their first appearance in America in the early 1900s. (For our history buffs, you can read more about the origin of credit unions here: https://ncua.gov/about/historical-timeline.)
They were created in response to an overwhelming need for lower interest rates than traditional banks could offer, and with the idea that if those in a community would pool their resources together for the benefit of any one community member in need, the world would be a better place. It was this sentiment that sparked the motto of credit unions: “People helping people.”
Complex Community Federal Credit Union was created in 1958 with that motto in mind when an employee of El Paso Natural Gas Company needed a new car, but due to his financial situation, was unable to secure a loan.
His team members pooled their money and decided to help their friend in need, offering him a loan at a modest interest rate. Decades later, we are still guided by that same spirit of “people helping people.”
The Credit Union Difference Starts with Ownership
Unlike banks that are owned by shareholders and driven by profit, credit unions are owned by their members who each have a vote in matters regarding the credit union. This means that at CCFCU, not only are you a member, but you’re also a part owner too!
We strive to make sure every member’s voice is heard. We hold an annual meeting every year in October and encourage our members to be part of this process. The decisions and conversations that happen there help shape the future of the credit union, creating a ripple effect that impacts our members, services, and surrounding communities.
We believe the strongest ideas come from the people we serve, which is why we encourage our entire community to share their needs, priorities, and goals with us.
Credit Unions Offer Trusted Federal Protection
The National Credit Union Administration, or the NCUA, was established in 1970 and oversees federally regulated credit unions to help ensure their safety, stability, and financial soundness. Through the NCUA, members’ deposit accounts are federally insured up to $250,000, providing the same level of protection offered by the FDIC for banks.
That means your money is backed by a trusted federal agency dedicated specifically to credit unions and the members they serve. The NCUA also helps monitor credit union operations, promote responsible financial practices, and protect members through ongoing supervision and regulation, giving you added peace of mind when banking with a credit union like CCFCU.
Built to Serve Members, Not Investors
Instead of being profit focused, any surplus earnings generated by a credit union are reinvested back into the organization for the benefit of members.
This includes improvements and opportunities designed to strengthen both the member experience and the surrounding community, such as:
- Lower interest rates that make borrowing more affordable for members.
- Higher yields on savings products that make your money work harder for you over time.
- Products, services, and digital tools shaped by member feedback and built to better support the everyday needs of the people we serve.
- Community involvement and outreach that supports local schools, nonprofits, events, and financial education initiatives.
This member-first approach is one of the biggest reasons credit unions continue to play such an important role in the communities they serve.
Community Is at the Heart of Credit Unions
Guided by the philosophy of “People Helping People,” this principle extends beyond financial products and low interest rates. Credit unions understand the importance of a strong community commitment (one of our favorite CCFCU core values!).
Here at CCFCU, we don’t want to simply exist within our communities, we want to help strengthen them.
Our team’s commitment shows up in several ways, from teaching money skills in local schools, to promoting financial capability by partnering with organizations and nonprofits that make a meaningful impact across West Texas and the South Plains.
Through community events, educational initiatives, volunteer efforts, and local partnerships, we’re committed to helping the communities we serve continue to grow and thrive.
Credit Unions Have Local Membership Requirements
To better serve our communities and in accordance with NACU regulations, Credit Unions often have specific membership requirements that must be met to become a member. For example, to become a CCFCU Member, one must live, work, and worship in the counties we serve. Read more about our membership guidelines here: https://www.comcfcu.com/membership/.
These guidelines help us to better serve our local communities by ensuring the money you entrust to us stays within our community and continues to benefit it.
Should You Join a Credit Union?
